The ‘Men in Black’ Are Coming Back With a New Spinoff in 2019

On the heels of today’s Charlie’s Angels casting news, Sony has set an official release date for another major potential franchise relaunch. A new Men in Black spinoff / reboot will hit theaters in 2019, taking audiences back to the hidden world of secret-secret-agents and aliens. Not to be confused with that long-rumored 21 Jump Street crossover (more on that in a moment), this one will introduce new characters while honoring the established universe of its predecessors.

‘Gerald’s Game’ Review: Stephen King’s Most Challenging Book Gets a Surprisingly Great Adaptation

IT may be the surprise box office hit of 2017, but it’s not the most surprising Stephen King adaptation of the year. That honor goes to Gerald’s Game, Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of what is perhaps the most un-adaptable novel in King’s bibliography — not necessarily in terms of the story’s graphic content, but by virtue of its narrative conceit. Approximately 98 percent of Gerald’s Game centers on one woman and her inner monologue as she desperately attempts to free herself from a dire situation.

‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’ Review: Vince Vaughn Is a Lean, Mean, All-American Skull-Bashing Machine

The current cinematic trend toward “explainer culture” — the need to dissect art to discern its true meaning and the demand for directors to explain their creative intentions — is counterintuitive to the enjoyment of art. As David Lynch once said, “The film is the thing.” The movie is the conversation; the only explanation that really matters is your own. And yet, walking out of Brawl in Cell Block 99, it’s almost impossible to not wonder about writer and director S. Craig Zahler’s intentions. Is this a genuine exploitation film, or is it merely exploitative? And if it’s the former, what place do those films have and what purpose do they serve in 2017?

What’s Expiring From Netflix: October 2017

By now you’ve probably heard that 30 Rock is leaving Netflix Instant, and if you’re anything like me, you are distraught. Inconsolable, even. The good news is that we still have Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Parks and Recreation, so there’s that, at least. Anyway, 30 Rock isn’t the only title expiring from Netflix in October, so let’s commence the mourning, shall we?

Jamie Lee Curtis to Reprise Iconic ‘Halloween’ Role for New Film

Here’s a surprising bit of news for your Friday: Jamie Lee Curtis is returning to the Halloween franchise to reprise her iconic role as Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green’s new sequel. As Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum promised earlier this week, that film – simply titled Halloween — will arrive in 2018. If it doesn’t meet that deadline, Blum says you can kill him. (But, you know, don’t do that.)

‘All the Money in the World‘ Trailer: Ridley Scott Revisits the Historical Getty Kidnapping

We’re getting not one, but two new Ridley Scott films this year. The prolific director’s next film, which is slated for an awards season release in December, is a dramatic thriller based on the infamous Getty kidnapping. The first trailer for All the Money in the World has arrived, and it boasts an ensemble that includes Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg, and an almost unrecognizable Kevin Spacey — giving Gary Oldman a run for his money in this year’s “actor becomes unrecognizable to play historical figure” race.

‘Wonder Woman 2’ to Be Co-Written by ‘The Expendables’ Scribe Dave Callaham

In a move that’s sure to elicit at least a few eye rolls, Warner Bros. has tapped a male screenwriter to collaborate with Patty Jenkins on the Wonder Woman sequel. But before you roll your eyes too hard, Dave Callaham has an existing working relationship with Jenkins: The pair were developing a mystery thriller together before Jenkins took the Wonder Woman gig.

Yes, Harrison Ford Punched Ryan Gosling in the Face But It Was Ryan Gosling’s Fault

Last fall, Ryan Gosling revealed that Harrison Ford punched him in the face — like, legit punched him in the face — on the set of Blade Runner 2049. It was for a scene they were filming in Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic, of course. Still, the thought of iconic curmudgeon Harrison Ford punching iconic pretty boy Ryan Gosling in the kisser is just so delightful. In a new interview, Ford responds to Gosling’s face-punching allegation by suggesting his younger co-star should be “grateful” it only happened once. That sound you hear is the firing of shots from Ford’s general vicinity.

‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Pushed Back to December 2019

And in other, totally unsurprising Star Wars: Episode IX news… Following this morning’s announcement that J.J. Abrams is returning to direct (and co-write) the trilogy finale comes word that the release date has been pushed back seven months from May 24, 2019 to December 20. Meanwhile, despite a change in directors and Ron Howard’s ongoing reshoots, the Han Solo spinoff weirdly remains the one Star Wars property that won’t be released in December.
