A Tuesday evening accident in Benton County took the life of a Cedar Rapids teenager.

19-year-old Nicholas D. Nelligan of Cedar Rapids was driving west on 64th Street south of Vinton at 6:55 Tuesday evening when he didn't stop at the intersection of Highway 218. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Nelligan crashed into a northbound semi on Highway 218, driven by 27-year-old Joshua A. Svoboda of Vinton.

Authorities say Nelligan and his passenger, 19-year-old Miranda Lynn Smith-Kay of Cedar Rapids, were not wearing seatbelts. Nelligan was killed in the accident and Smith-Kay was injured. Benton County EMS transported Smith-Kay to the Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton for treatment of her injuries. Svoboda was not injured in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Another accident in eastern Iowa Tuesday evening, just before 8 p.m., injured two. The Iowa State Patrol says a car driven by Dalton Garcia of Bussey, Iowa was traveling west on Highway 92 in Mahaska County when it rear-ended a vehicle driven by Denise Allgood of Oskaloosa. The two vehicles then entered the path of an eastbound vehicle driven by Jeffery Hartzell of Bellevue, Nebraska. All three vehicles were thrown into the ditches along the roadway.

Garcia, 22, was transported by AirCare to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and Allgood, 51, was taken by ambulance to the Mahaska County Hospital. Hartzell, 41, wasn't injured. The accident is still under investigation.
