A new bus service is coming later this year that will provide service between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The Iowa Department of Transportation hopes that an express bus between the two cities will help some commuters better deal with the daily stresses of driving on the interstate.

Beginning on October 1st, four Windstar Lines buses will offer services between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The ride will cost $3.50 one way and $7 for a round-trip ticket. Buses will run every 30 minutes from 5:20 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then go hourly. Buses will begin returning at 3:20 p.m. every 30 minutes until 8 p.m.

A survey done back in 2014 supported the idea of a bus service between the two cities, citing nearly 70% of those surveyed saying they'd use the service. Transportation officials hope that millennials will be drawn to the option, as well as people who have difficulties driving.

The stops on the route will include the Cedar Rapids Ground Transportation Center, Kirkwood Community College, Coralville's Iowa River Landing, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The final Iowa City stop will be the Court Street Transportation Center. Officials estimate that around 500 people will use the service daily.
