Winter is here! In case you haven't already noticed by these freezing temperatures. The cold weather may not be so fun, but ice rinks are!

It's time to break out your ice skates because the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department announced in a press release this afternoon that they will open not one, but TWO ground ice rinks on Thursday, January 4!

The rinks will be located at Bever Park (2700 Bever Park Ave. SE) AND at Arthur School (2630 B Ave. NE). They will be open for all recreational use, are not supervised, and the best part about the rinks is that they are FREE! Plus, you'll have plenty of time to take the family to one since they are open everyday from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. and are lighted from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (you know, so you can see where you're skating).

According to the press release, the warmer weather in previous years have prevented the construction of the outdoor rinks "four inches of frost followed by a minimum of three nights with below zero temperatures to freeze 8 to 12 inches of water. Daytime temperatures must stay below 32 degrees over this 72-hour time span to keep the ice frozen."

The rinks will remain open as long as this cold weather holds. We know, it's bitter sweet.
