Celebrate National Make Music Day In The Corridor

Almost everyone's life in one way or another benefits greatly from listening to or playing music, especially young people. Studies and statistics have proven it to relieve stress, decrease blood pressure, improve memory, social confidence and more.

That's why next Thursday, June 21, is designated as "Make Music Day" around the world. On that night, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City join the movement, as Hancher Auditorium and West Music team up for a special, family-friendly series of events.

The Eastern Iowa Arts Academy in Cedar Rapids hosts an Electric Jam from 3-5 p.m. on June 21, where student musicians in grades K-12 are invited to the West Music location in Cedar Rapids (1325 Twixt Town Road in Marion) to perform together with their electric instruments for an outdoor jam session.

Additionally, West Music invites everyone from new players to seasoned musicians to join in the "global music celebration" of Make Music Day at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City, from 5:30- 7 p.m.

This event features activities including a harmonica performance with local music celebrity Kevin Burt, ukulele players, drum circle and an instrument “petting zoo.”  The Sousapalooza at the Old Capitol "invites local brass, woodwind, and percussion players to come together to 'sight read' music from "The March King", John Phillips Sousa."
