A committee has decided that a controversial book will remain in a Dubuque high school. 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' is required reading for an advanced placement literature class at Dubuque Hempstead High School. Recently, some parents have complained because of the book's themes of drug and alcohol use and sexual activity.

At a public hearing last night, most comments made were in support of keeping the book. An appointed committee on the issue decided that the book would remain in the class.

The district has reminded parents that the book is only required for the advanced class, and the teacher will provide an alternate book if parents request one.
