Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire at the end of the current NASCAR season. This according to sources with Hendrick Motorsports. The 42-year-old Earnhardt shared the news with teammates Tuesday morning. An official news conference is scheduled for later this afternoon.

Dale Jr. has raced more than 600 times and won 26 Cup Series races including two Daytona 500's. He has been voted NASCAR's most popular driver a record 14 consecutive seasons.

Earnhardt missed most of the 2016 season due to the lingering effects of a concussion. This is Dale Jr's 18th season behind the wheel.
