Dave Chappelle Recalls First Kanye West Meeting [VIDEO]
Dave Chappelle appeared on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' last night to promote his shows at Radio City Music Hall where he will be performing from June 18 to June 26 with some guest musical acts such as The Roots, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu.
During his interview, Fallon asked about meeting Kanye West for the first time, who made his national TV debut appearing on The Chappelle Show with rapper Common in 2004.
"You could tell he was going to be a star. I didn't know him until he did the show," Chapelle admitted. "It was like Muhammad Ali in Olympic Village. He just knew he was going to get the gold."
"It was the day that Jay Z's 'Black' album came out," Chappelle continued, "and it was me and Common and [Talib] Kweli and Kanye, this guy that nobody knew. The record starts, and Jay Z says on one record, 'Kanye, he's a genius / He did it again' and Kanye stood up. First time he spoke all day, and he goes, 'STOP THE RECORD! AND REWIND THAT!'"
He later tells the story about showing Kanye some sketches from 'The Chappelle Show' backstage and in the middle of showing him clips, Kanye's cellphone rang. Chappelle recalled that before Kanye hung up, he said to the person on the phone, "Because my life is dope, and I do dope [beep]."
Sounds like Kanye was very much sure he was headed for stardom back then! Click on the video above to watch Chappelle's anecdote about a young Kanye West.
