Police in Keokuk, Iowa have removed nearly two dozen dogs from the home of one of the city's residents and charged him with animal cruelty.

69-year-old William Howard faces 23 charges of animal cruelty along with keeping animals in unsanitary conditions. He faces additional counts.

A call to his attorney by the Associated Press was not returned immediately. According to KWWL, the dogs were found when officers of the Keokuk Police Department searched the property October 5.
