I don't know about you, but I am a sucker for sad songs. If you look at my playlists on my phone, I actually have one JUST for songs that make me cry. Sometimes you just need to let it out, you know?

This morning I came across a list of the top five saddest number one hits, according to an algorithm from Spotify. Those five songs are:

  1. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack
  2. Three Times a Lady - The Commodores
  3. Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Elvis Presley
  4. Mr. Custer - Larry Verne
  5. Still - The Commodores

We were a little disappointed by this list because only two of the five are actually sad. Some of them sound sad, but lyrically they're not. That inspired us to go searching for songs that are legitimately upsetting, words and all. I would have to say that country music has some of the best sad songs. Here are the top five saddest country songs, according to Rolling Stone

  1. Concrete Angel - Martina McBride
  2. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - Hank Williams
  3. Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley & Allison Krause
  4. He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
  5. The Little Girl - John Michael Montgomery

Personally, the song that always gets me is John Mayer's "Stop This Train." I can't even listen to it anymore because I get too emotional! If you've never heard it, here's a live version of the song:

We asked listeners on Facebook to tell us what songs they think are the absolute saddest. Here are some of the results:
