Just as I had discussed credibility returning to broadcast network news in a previous blog, one cable news source I rely on has turned in the opposite direction.

While Bill O'Reilly and other opinion commentators have always given Fox News Channel a reputation for being overly one-sided, the straight news coverage is usually more "fair and balanced", as their slogan goes, than a lot of people gave them credit for.

Unfortunately, the first Republican presidential debate changed that perception for me. Moderators Bret Baier, Chris Wallace and, especially, Megyn Kelly had what I saw as a very clear agenda to knock down front-runner Donald Trump (who, for the record, I don't believe is in the race for the duration despite a massive lead in polling), while going easy on Jeb Bush by giving him more leeway with both their questions and his responses. Nevermind the attempted marginalization altogether of other candidates like Scott Walker and Rand Paul. To illustrate this point, there was a post from Newsweek breaking down the speaking time given to each candidate in the debate.

While it may be difficult to give truly equal time to a field of seventeen people--so difficult, in fact, that it was split into two debate groups, what the main debate showed was an obvious agenda for and against certain candidates, even within a single political party

More debates, on Fox and elsewhere, will take place through this election cycle--and it's going to be a long haul to November 2016, for sure. Time will tell if future coverage is more fair as the field of hopefuls gets narrowed down.  For now, my preferred cable news source has a lot of work to do to earn back my trust.

Meanwhile, in lighter campaign news, a Presidential candidate from Iowa with a unique name made waves in polls last week, and for a little debate humor check out this hilarious video parody of the debate featuring children imitating the candidates, from MSNBC and FunnyOrDie.
