If you're lucky, you and the kids may get a few days off together next week and throughout the holidays--which, by the way, I say not to be politically correct, but to encompass the entire slew of them that run together consecutively for the next couple of months. It gets busy this time of year, so if you have free time, think about ways to spend it wisely together.

    Give Help

This is a good time to help where it's needed and learn the meaning of giving. Make it a teaching moment with the kids. Donate old toys to Toys For Tots, ring the bell for the Salvation Army--or serve meals to those in need. There are many people, places--and animals in need. Find a local organization or cause to which you can volunteer your time or donate supplies.

    Family Time

Participate in some family bonding activities over the holidays. Go bowling, watch movies, or just have a night at home where all the electronics are shut off so you can focus on each other. Give everyone roles in preparing Thanksgiving dinner--or cleaning up afterwards--together.

    Stay Sharp

I know. The whole point of a holiday break is to not work or study. But you'll do yourself a huge favor when you go back by staying caught up while on your break.

    Go Shopping

Even if you don't believe in shopping on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday, the crowds at stores are soon going to start growing for Christmas shopping. Do yours while you're off for Thanksgiving. If online shopping is more your style, start scouting for deals.

    Give Thanks

It's called Thanksgiving for a reason. If not physically by way of helping someone with their needs, at least mentally use this time to count your blessings and realize just how much you have to be thankful for.
