Halloween is now just a week away, which means the night of ghosts, monsters, witches, and black cats is coming up.  There's just so many superstitions, especially involving black cats. Poor kitties.  As a black cat owner myself, I can tell you there's more good than bad to making a black cat part of your home. Here's a list of 9 great things about black cats, courtesy of Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control.

  1. You can always find your black cat in the snow.
  2. Black goes with everything - It's true. If a white cat jumped on your black power suit, it's all over. But if your black cat wants a little love and affection, no harm done--your look is only enhanced!
  3. Black cats are distantly related to the black panther. Their regal breeding is very apparent. Black cats are majestic, mysterious, incredibly loving and loyal, and intelligent.
  4. A black cat will match any décor. You won't have to redecorate your house to coordinate with your cat. Black cats look great on any color sofa, rug or chair.
  5. Black is beautiful. There's the deep, auburn shaded black, the blue black, the black with tiny white highlights here and there, the sleek black, the fluffy black, the black with bunny-soft fur, the black with yellow eyes, the black with green eyes… Well, you get the picture.
  6. Black cats are NOT bad luck! When you love a black cat, luck is on your side! Groucho Marx once said that “a black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.” Nothing more, nothing less.
  7. Black cats have more fun. You only thought blondes had more fun. Black cats are fun-loving, playful, mischievous, good-natured, and full of high spirits.
  8. Black cats are very loving. They know their reputation – scary, right? To make up for that, they go overboard to be as affectionate and loving as any fluffy white, pink-nosed kitty could be, and you get to reap the benefits!
  9. Love knows no color! Your cat doesn't care what color YOUR hair is!

Did you also know black cats are statistically the least likely to get adopted? It's true.  Darn superstitions.

So if you’re thinking about adopting a furry feline to cuddle up with as the weather gets cooler, think about adopting an enchanting, black cat.

The adoption fee is just $25 on all black cats now through October 31st at the shelter.  Additionally, the Cedar Valley Humane Society is running their "Half-Price Half Pints" special on all kittens through November 2nd, where you're sure to find baby kitties of all colors (in case you're still leery about beautiful black cats.)
