Gerry Hickey, one of the first captains of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, has died. Hickey passed away in his hometown of Boston. He was just 35 years old. Details on his death aren't available, but Hickey had been hospitalized for the past two weeks.

Hickey had 38 goals and 31 assists for the RoughRiders in the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons, the first two years in the club's history. His rough and tumble playing style also lead to a lot of penalty minutes during those years as well. Fans would often chant his name after a huge hit.

After the RoughRiders, Hickey went on to play one season at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He played 3 more seasons of minor league hockey after that. RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson called Hickey "the ultimate RoughRider."
