It started out as the central fire station in downtown Cedar Rapids, and later became the Science Station.

Now, a building that has sat vacant at 427 First St. SE since the 2008 flood, is about to become something else entirely.

At least that's the plan, according to the Gazette, who reports a development company that has purchased the property, wants to turn it into office space.

It was built in 1900 and placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2014.

GLD Commercial is the company who has taken over ownership of the building, and its president says the remodeling has already begun. The second floor is expected to house offices, with the first floor being leased to a lone tenant, possibly Guaranty Bank, who recently merged with Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust.
