Halloween can be pretty exciting, but with all the excitement it's important to remember to stay safe. Here are five safety tips to keep in mind this Halloween.

  • 1

    Walk Safely

Children under the age of 12 should not be roaming the streets alone without adult supervision. But, if you are of age be sure to stay in well-lit areas. Always stay on sidewalks, paths, or as far from traffic as possible. Also, these days we are all attached to our phones. Put them down when crossing streets, so that you can keep your head up and be completely aware of your surroundings.

    Keep Costumes Safe

Costumes can still be creative while being safe. When decorating your or your child's costume, use reflective tape or stickers to make it stand out to drivers. Having kids carry glow sticks or flashlights will also help with this. It's also important to make sure a costume fits. This way there is no tripping and falling. Instead of masks, use facepaint, so that vision is not obstructed.

    Dress For The Weather

Halloween seems to be getting colder and colder every year. Dress for the weather to avoid getting sick. Taking a jacket, gloves, or even some hand warmers will be sure to help you stay warm.

Make Sure Kids Have Contact Info

For young children, who may not know their parents number yet, putting some sort of identification on them is an extra way to ensure their safety. Putting a simple nametag on their costume --with your phone number -- could definitely help out if your child gets lost.

    Check Candy Before Eating

Lastly, here's a tip we all should know by now. Before feasting on Halloween candy, check all of the treats to make sure they are still sealed and have not been tampered with. Throw out any candy that is opened, torn, has holes in the packages, is spoiled, or anything that is homemade by someone you do not know. Unfortunately these days it is better to be safe than sorry. Also keep hard candy and gum away from small children, as it could cause choking.
