UPDATE: A list of Stores who may have sold the contaminated salad has been released.

If you recently bought the Summer Pasta Salad from Hy-Vee, you should not eat it, but instead toss it immediately, or head back to your local Hy-Vee, as they have issued a recall specifically on that product.

According to a press release issued by the company, Hy-Vee corporate learned Monday, that some frozen vegetables that they use to make the popular salad were potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  Symptoms of bacterial infection for healthy individuals may be short term high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, but these symptoms can lead to larger, more serious, sometimes fatal concerns for those with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.  The frozen vegetables in question were produced by a company called Inventure Foods, based out of Georgia.

This salad would have been purchased directly from the kitchen counter, packaged in clear plastic containers.  It would most likely also have been available at the salad bar. However, it was not necessarily available at all Hy-Stores.  Regardless, precautions should be taken, and Hy-Vee is doing there part to make sure all the product is disposed of, and unavailable for consumption. And this doesn't just impact Iowa.  The product also would have been available at stores in Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Locally, the following stores may have sold the contaminated product:

  • CEDAR RAPIDS - 279 COLLINS ROAD N.E.
  • CEDAR RAPIDS - 5050 EDGEWOOD RD.
  • CORALVILLE - 1914 8TH STREET
  • IOWA CITY - 1201 NORTH DODGE
  • WATERLOO - 1422 FLAMMANG DRIVE
  • WATERLOO - 4000 UNIVERSITY

The good news is, so far, Hy-Vee has not received any complaints associated with the Summer Fresh Pasta Salad.  However, if you may have purchased the product between April 9th and April 27th, you should immediately dispose of it, or return it to the store for a full refund.
