He went out with some former classmates Friday night and Saturday morning was found unconscious with severe injuries. Now his family is searching for answers.

Ryan Jansa, 24, was out with former University of Iowa classmates Friday evening but early Saturday morning they became separated. Several hours later, he was found in an alley on College Street behind The Union Bar and Graze with severe facial and head injuries.

Jansa's sister, Andrea Woodward of Des Moines, told the Des Moines Register, "He underwent two brain surgeries on Saturday. They removed some skull bone to relieve the pressure."

Meanwhile, Iowa City Police Chief Sam Hargadine says, "Right now we have nothing to believe that an assault occurred. It’s looking like potentially he fell and hit his head, but we’re still investigating because of the extent of the injuries to the person."

Woodward understands the Iowa City Police Department's line of thinking, saying, "It’s crossed my mind that perhaps he fell, but he has contusions on both sides of his head that were pretty severe so as far as falling and hitting one side, that’s harder to believe."

Jansa is in stable condition but is unable to speak or respond to commands. While he recovers the police and his family, continue to look for answers. He was last seen around 1:30 Saturday morning at  the Field House in Iowa City. Anyone who saw him after 1:30 a.m. that might be able to aid in the investigation is asked to call the Iowa City Police Department.
