On Wednesday night the Iowa Senate voted against a complete ban on traffic cameras.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Senator Brad Zaun was in favor of the out-right ban citing the unconstitutionality of the cameras, which infringe on "Iowans' due process rights."

17 Democrats and 14 Republicans gave the ban a thumbs down saying that the safety benefits outweigh the concerns of the rights for "due process" that others say they are denied by the cameras.

A revised bill would restrict camera placement to only high-risk or high-crash areas along highways.

Another big concern is how money generated from the traffic fines is allocated. The revised bill would direct profits from the cameras to infrastructure and public safety purposes.

The bill passed with a 31-18 majority, and now it goes to the House for confirmation.
