A small Iowa town was in the record book from 1995 to 2004 and two other times since. This weekend, the community came together to obliterate a record that will hopefully keep them on top for a long time.

The north central Iowa town of Sac City built a giant popcorn ball over the weekend. And I mean GIANT.

Sac City, the "Popcorn Capital," first took the record for largest popcorn ball in 1995 with one that weighed 2,225-pounds. Nine years later, they were knocked out of the top spot so the city made a 3,100 pounder. When that record was also bested, they constructed a popcorn sphere that weighed more than 5,000 pounds in 2009. Then in 2013, the Indiana State Fair built a popcorn ball that weighed 6,510 pounds, according to World Record Academy. Saturday, the community was determined to set a record that would hopefully stand for awhile. The town of Sac City wants this record, you see. They want it BAD.

According to the TH Online, the popcorn ball they made Saturday and Saturday night (these things take time) was made of 2,300 pounds of popcorn, 4,900 pounds of sugar, plus thousands of more pounds of water, preservative, and dry syrup mix. It's all contained in a 2,000-pound plastic container made in Odebolt, Iowa. The official weight? 9,370 pounds or nearly 3,000 pounds more than the previous record. I told you they wanted that record BAD. The Guinness Book of World Records is already on alert, waiting on all the necessary documentation.

The massive popcorn ball will be on display in Sac City's Museum complex. The building will have windows on three sides. If they're smart, they'll also sell popcorn balls close by. Much smaller ones. I predict sales will be brisk. Excuse me while I go pop up a tasty treat right now.
