Iowa’s Bottle Deposit To Stick Around A Little Longer

I can see a day in the not too distant future when the 5 cent bottle deposit in Iowa is a thing of the past. Another effort in the Iowa Legislature to get rid of the bottle bill has failed so the deposit in Iowa will remain for the time being.

The House Ways and Means Committee discussed the Iowa Bottle bill yesterday. The bill would have eliminated the 5 cent deposit on cans and bottles and expanded curbside recycling programs. A separate House bill that would have expanded the bottle deposit to juice, sports drinks and water bottles also failed to gain traction.

The Senate is still debating completely getting rid of Iowa's bottle bill. A subcommittee will discuss that starting today. Is it time for the Iowa bottle bill to go? We're one of only ten states to have a bottle deposit. Many grocery stores have stopped taking bottles and cans at their locations due to issues of cleanliness. The days of gathering up your cans and seeing how much change you get back are numbered in Iowa.
