No one was exactly surprised to hear that FX’s Katrina: American Crime Story had stalled in favor of Versace, but neither FX nor Ryan Murphy will scrap the idea outright. Instead, production has been pushed to 2019 with a revamped premise and cast, and confirmed to feature Sarah Paulson in a leading role.

Where previously director Anthony Hemmingway revealed that little work had been done on the Louisiana-based season – itself once set as the second American Crime Story and airing in 2018 with VersaceThe Hollywood Reporter updates to reveal that the limited series has been given significant overhaul. Katrina will swap source material of Douglas Brinkley’s The Great Deluge for Sheri Frank’s Five Days at Memorial, with Paulson now the only confirmed casting.

The 2019 production date will at least try to find new roles for Dennis Quaid, Annette Bening and Matthew Broderick, who were previously booked to play President George W. Bush, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and FEMA director Michael D. Brown. The original Katrina was said to have difficulty finding a central story within The Great Deluge, while Five Days at Memorial follows Dr. Anna Pou (Paulson) and staff making decisions to euthanize critically ill patients in a hospital without power, for which there were numerous prosecution attempts.

It’s unclear if the shift to 2019 production will lead to a premiere in the same year, or what becomes of a proposed fourth season; said to follow the Monica Lewinsky investigation. We’ll at least have The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story next year, but should Katrina be scrapped altogether?
