It's a big day in our house this morning as my daughter turns 10. Whenever there's a birthday, we always try to go the extra mile and make it special of course. To do that, we have traditions, which I forgot about.  Thankfully, I didn't forget about the birthday. As for the traditions though, I did get a reminder, around 11p last night.  So as I'm getting ready for a glass of wine and some much desired couch time, the wine gets set aside to dig out balloons, banners, and more. Might I remind you most of the ideas are of course from Pinterest.

First thing was to grab window chalk and write a message on the bathroom mirror.  Then it was blowing up 10 balloons, each with a dollar inserted in it. The balloons hang from her bedroom door frame, but have to be high enough so the cat's don't bother them in the middle of the night.  Next it was hang the banner and more balloons.  Then, clean up everything.  Done for the night, wine in hand, it's now a lot later than in should be, as I have to be up early for the final step.

For the past couple years, we have spoiled the kids with a birthday cake breakfast. Well, kind-of, as the cake is made up of stacked donuts, complete with the candles.  So first thing in the morning, it's off to the store to get the donuts. All the while, everyone else is still in bed, including my wife. Well, the always early riser birthday girl is up, and now I'm ditching her without an explanation. It's for a good cause though. And not only did I return with the doughnuts, but also with flowers.  The HyVee ladies applauded my efforts.

The kicker to all this: my daughter came down with a bad cold the other day. So when it came time to blow out the candles, we had to separate one doughnut from the rest for her to blow out. She didn't mind though. And even though she's sick, she's starting the day in a great mood, as it should be on any kids birthday.

Happy Birthday Mikayla!
