We are in a strange era of television with networks reviving beloved shows like The X-Files and, uh, Full House, and developing sequel TV shows for the kind of movies you never really thought needed a sequel — like Training Day and Limitless (though the latter seems to be doing okay). The latest movie to get its own baffling TV follow-up is Cruel Intentions, the 1999 thriller that weirdly spawned a few direct-to-video sequels already.

THR reports that NBC has officially ordered a pilot for the Cruel Intentions sequel series, maybe because someone at NBC caught a watered-down weekend matinee showing of the late ’90s cult favorite on USA. Ding, lightbulb, profit.

The original film followed the steamy exploits of step-siblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), a wealthy and privileged pair of teens with a rather…inappropriate…relationship and a fondness for sex and drugs. There was also a virginal Reese Witherspoon and an iconic kissing scene between Gellar and Selma Blair that was spoofed incessantly for the next two years.

The sequel series will pick up 15 years after the events of the film, as Kathryn fights for control over the family business and tries to dig her claws into her late step-brother’s son, Bash Casey (as far as fictional names go, this one ranks somewhere between early ’90s high school bully and late ’90s heartthrob in a teen rom-com), the son of Sebastian and Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon). Bash (sure, why not) finds his father’s infamous journal and quickly learns all about sex and drugs and nefarious high school schemes and the casual objectification of his female peers.

Original Cruel Intentions writer-director Roger Kumble will develop the script with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross, the pair behind last year’s satirical stage musical version of the 1999 film. No word on if Gellar will return to reprise her role as Kathryn, but we can dream.
