Nearly One Thousand Rescued Iowa Animals Need Your Help

Stories like this always break my heart into a million pieces. Yesterday, animal rescuers with The Cedar Valley Humane Society made a visit to a home on 6th St. in Vinton, where they discovered hundreds of animals in a neglectful situation. The Director of Development & Community Outreach for the Cedar Valley Humane Society Preston Moore told CBS 2 that it was their largest rescue to date and the worst conditions that he has ever witnessed. CBS 2 reports that the animals rescued from the home include, "guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and rabbits, hedgehogs, chinchillas, turtles, fish, birds, and a ball python."

The horrible conditions were discovered when the owner of the home, Babs Galkowski, was reported to police for violating city ordinances. She said that she acquired the animals by rescuing them and that she was recently sick, which is why the conditions weren't ideal. Many of the animals were found to be dehydrated and malnourished, with some found to have had illegal surgery performed on them, and others already dead. Barb still plans to fight for custody.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society has teamed up with Friends of the Shelter and Wild Thunder Animal Rescue to build a temporary shelter for these rescued animals, but they also need help from the public. They are in need of supplies such as:

• small animal cages
• Water bottles for animal cages
• Food bowls that clip onto small cages
• HE laundry detergent
• Bird food
• Paper animal bedding
• Small mammal nail trimmers
