On July 1 a new Iowa law goes on the books that allows cops to pull you over and ticket you for texting and driving.

According to Iowa State Daily, cell phone usage was previously considered a secondary offense, meaning officers needed another reason to stop a driver. Now, officers can pull over drivers solely for phone usage.

Under the new law signed by Governor Terry Branstad earlier this spring, cops will now be able to pull over drivers they suspect of using their phone while behind the wheel, including "writing, sending or viewing an electronic message".

The law also bans the use of mobile devices while driving for email, social media, watching video, but allows for other uses like GPS features for getting directions.

If it all sounds confusing, welcome to Iowa, land of vague laws (think fireworks sales...)
