The Hawkeye Nation is getting off easy on a new anti-tobacco rule. Last August, the new school year started with a campus-wide ban on smokes, e-cigs, chew and hookahs. Dozens of citations were issued before the arrival of the new year, but since Jan. 1, there have been none issued.

Officers are either giving simple warnings instead or, they don't arrive in time to find the offending parties. You can still smoke on Iowa City-owned streets and sidewalks, but the new rule says no to tobacco on university grounds. After warnings are issued, a fine of $50 can be imposed. With the lack of citations, it looks as though authorities have better things to police on campus.
