Friday is going to be a pretty amazing day for much of Iowa City. There will be plenty of parents and students feeling the angst throughout the day, however. You see, Iowa City High and Iowa City West will play one another for the 5A Girls State Basketball Championship in Des Moines.

The chances of this happening are slim. Really slim. However, City High took care of business in their semifinal game today and Iowa City West followed suit, later in the day.

Iowa City High has announced they'll release students an hour early tomorrow for the 6 p.m. tip-off at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. There may be many friendships shared between these opponents, but this is THE game they all work so hard to get to.

City High's only girls state basketball championship came in 2008. Iowa City West has won one as well. That came in 2012.

Those aren't the only area teams playing for state championships tomorrow. Marion defeated Center Point-Urbana earlier this afternoon. Marion will play Grinnell tomorrow night at 8 for the 4A title.

Three other area teams still hope to join the championship game parade. Monticello plays in the 3A semifinals tonight and Cascade and Springville play Friday in the 2A and 1A semifinals, respectively.

Good luck to you all!
