Police had to use deadly force to stop a suspect involved in a shootout Friday afternoon in the small town of Ottumwa, IA.

Cops received a call at 1:44 p.m. and were told three people, one with an assault rifle, were spotted running away from an area toward the direction of Liberty Elementary School.

It was reported that the suspect armed with an assault rifle opened fire at police. Police engaged the suspects and one person was killed, another was seriously injured and one other was taken into custody according to KCRG.

The school had a summer program in session and went into lockdown mode. No students inside were hurt. The school posted on updates on social media to let parents know of the active shooter situation, and when it was safe to pick up kids.

Ottumwa residents in the neighborhood were told to stay inside while police searched for that fourth suspect who had escaped the initial confrontation. He was captured around 8:00 pm near a farm field.
