A man was struck and killed this morning on Iowa's Highway 218 near Tiffin. KCRG/TV9 reports that the crash took place near mile marker 96 on the northbound lanes of Highway 218.

It was around 5:22 this morning (April 5) when authorities arrived on scene according to the report. The Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Sheriff, Iowa City Police, and Johnson County Ambulance all responded to the incident. It states that 65-year-old Mark Meyer of Keosauqua was "driving a semi northbound on Highway 218 when he hit a pedestrian on the highway."

That pedestrian was John Douglas Riffle IV, 23, from Springville. Apparently, Riffle was crossing the right northbound lane on the highway when he was struck by Meyer. Riffle was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities are unsure of why Riffle was crossing the highway, but the accident is being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol.
