Pets and Halloween don't always mix well.  Sure, they look totally adorable in those costumes, but should you take them trick or treating? And how will they handle those strange, and creepy, costumes coming to the door?  You might want to review these tips courtesy of Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control to keep them safe.

Pets are fun, and normally quite loveable, but there's some situations, out of the norm, that you just might not be 100% sure how they will react, and Halloween Night is one of them.

    Costumes

In terms of those costumes, no matter how cute they look dressed up, keep it to your family.  Don't every plan to take a pet out trick or treating with you.  It's just too much going on for them.  And make sure you only put a costume on them if you're completely sure they'll be okay with it.  With the stress of the night, you won't want to taunt them more.

    Keep Them Inside

If you have pets who spend a lot of time outside, Halloween night would be a good night to avoid that.  Keep the cats in and away from the swarms of people and cars.  Same goes for dogs, who can often become a target for pranksters.

    Wear That Collar

Make sure your pets have their tags on.  That door is continuously opening for trick or treaters, and it's possible they could get out.  Make sure all precautions are taken, just in case that happens.

    Try to Keep It Quiet

It might be the best idea to keep the pets far way from the front door, if not in a calm, quiet, secluded place, especially if there's a possibility they get skittish about the door bell or too many kids.  The stress might literally make them sick.

    Where's the Candy?

You know what'll definitely make pets sick?  The candy.  Trust us, they'll take every opportunity to investigate the candy bowls or treat bags that smell so good.  However, it can be toxic to them.  Just another reason to keep them far away from the front door, and all candy.

    Decorations

Finally, be very mindful of decorations that can be hazardous to pets, such and Jack-O-Laterns with candles, or even electrical cords.  Again, with the stress of the night, you never know what they might chew.
