As referenced here, winter really has 2 phases.  Unfortunately, as the pretty phase fades, and all the Christmas lights are shut off, and the decorations put away, we're left with the cold winter "blah".  In my house, we try and fend that off by keeping up any winter decorations that aren't Christmas decorations.  Most of this includes snowmen.  Snowmen are one of the few fun things left for winter celebration. However, the real ones have to stay outside. And if you're like my wife, and want to avoid the outdoors as much as possible during this time of year, you need an alternative.  That's where this plastic cup snowman comes from.  It makes a cute project, and cuter decoration, that can fill that void where the tree used to stand.  It also works if you're in an area where there isn't snow, but you still want the winter fun experience.

A couple words of advice though if you're ready to get started on this project.

  • A good stapler is key, preferably with a bit longer staples.  My stapler wasn't the greatest, and the staples didn't close often.  This left me with a couple skin punctures, as well as cups that weren't holding.  Also, be prepared for your fingers to be a bit sore from all the stapling.
  • If you're a perfectionist, this project will bug the heck out of you.  There's not a great science in getting the cups lined up, and for those who need things neat and orderly, you'll spend way too much time fixing things.
  • The cups will rip, tear, and break.  Just do your best and keep going.  It should have plenty of staples to hold it together.
  • Unless you have a big storage space, it may be a one season project, as it's also a bit fragile.
  • Prepare for more cups than you need.  The bottom layer I used about 200 cups, but could have easily used another 25-50.  The top layer was almost perfect at 150 cups.
  • Assembly time, if focused, should take about an hour and a half, maybe less, so it's really not too bad.
