Cedar Rapids police are warning residents to be on the lookout for ATM skimmers. The machines are used to lift a person's pin number which is then used to gain access to that person's bank account.

CRPD has notified local banks and credit unions that they've seen an increase in skimmer activity in the area. Police say cardholders can take a few simple steps to make sure your card is safe. First, know your ATM machine. Look for anything hanging from it or that looks like it doesn't belong. Always conceal the keypad when entering your PIN. Monitor your bank account and contact your financial institution right away about charges that look suspicious.

If you believe that your ATM has been tampered with, you are urged to also contact the Cedar Rapids police department.
