A family-owned company that employs 2,000 plans to add more workers and enlarge their facility.

Well Enterprises, maker of Blue Bunny ice cream and frozen novelties, has announced plans for an expansion of $40.5 million in LeMars, Iowa. The expansion would include an addition of 6,000-square-foot to the South plant. Wells would also add a pair of production lines, along with other investments.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority Board has its monthly meeting Friday and is expected to consider Wells request for nearly $3 million in tax credits and almost $200,000 in tax refunds.

Blue Bunny was born in the mid-1930's following a "name that ice cream" contest, sponsored by the Wells Brothers. A man from Sioux City suggested "Blue Bunny" because his son loved the blue bunnies that were in the window of a department store. The rest, as they say, is history.

There are now more than 100 varieties of Blue Bunny ice cream and frozen novelties.

Now, if you'll excuse me... I need to get to the store.
