Where to race horses go when their careers are over? Is there some sort of retirement home for horses that have run their last race. It turns out that there IS, and it's in Lisbon, Iowa. Unbridled Spirits is a thoroughbred retirement ranch for horses whose racing days are over. They currently house around 20 horses who are living out their golden years right here in eastern Iowa. People are encouraged to come and visit the one-time star athletes and learn more about the history of horse racing and breeding.

The most famous resident is Seatle Proud, the son of Seatle Slew who in 1977 won the Triple Crown. The ranch features horses from all over the United States including Maryland, Kentucky, California, and Florida. And just because they are too 'old' for racing, doesn't mean they can't live productive lives in another capacity.

Since Unbridled Spirits is a non-profit, fundraising is crucial to the upkeep and expansion of facilities. One way you can support the cause is to attend the 'Talk Derby To Me' event this Saturday at Sutliff Cider in Lisbon. The evening centers around the running of the Kentucky Derby but offers tons of entertainment! Doors open at 4 pm with a cocktail hour followed by the viewing of the Derby. There is a Big Hats and Bow Tie contest and the event will feature live music from Flash in a Pan.

Tickets are on sale now for $50 in advance at www.unbridledspiritottbstore.org or by calling 471-3545. Tickets are $60 at the door.
