CBS2 is reporting this afternoon that Ron Corbett's gubernatorial candidacy is being challenged on the basis of false signatures appearing on his petition.

A formal challenge to his June 5 primary run has been filed after he was accused of duplicating signatures.

Reporter Craig Robinson of the Iowa Republican obtained a copy of Corbett's papers and says that Corbett submitted 4,088 signatures, to put him 83 signatures ahead of the required threshold to make the ballot. However, Robinson claims there is reason to believe 103 of the signatures are duplicates, which would drop Corbett below the required threshold.

Corbett told the Gazette the accusations are "baseless", and he, along with Robinson, will have their chance to present their cases to a committee on the issue as early as next week, said Secretary of State Paul Pate.
