Sam Smith took the stage during tonight's (February 28) 2016 Academy Awards to perform his Oscar-nominated song "Writing's on the Wall."

Mere weeks after the Spectre theme song won Smith his first Golden Globe for Best Original Song, the singer -- who was introduced by Sarah Silverman -- swayed his way through a faithful performance of the track at Los Angeles' Dolby Theater.

Reactions to Smith's (physically shaky) performance were mostly unfavorable:

Smith first confirmed his involvement with "Writing's on the Wall" back in September, months after rumors first began circulating online that he'd been afforded the honor of recording the highly coveted Bond theme song.

The singer wrote about the opportunity in an Instagram post, where he declared the track a highlight of his career.

“I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible lineup of some of my biggest musical inspirations," he wrote. "I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."

“The Writing’s on the Wall” is up against The Weeknd’s sultry “Earned It,” from the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, “Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction, “Simple Song #3” from Youth and Lady Gaga's harrowing “Til It Happens to You” which was co-written with Diane Warren for The Hunting Ground.
