A saxy, funky new place is coming to Cedar Rapids, and we can't wait.

Cedar Rapids already has a vibrant nightlife, but what it hasn't had in a while is something for the cool, laid-back, more subdued night owls (like yours truly) who want to have their cake and eat it too. A fun place to hang out with a quieter party atmosphere.

Enter "Uptown Live". It is now open at 1323 1st Ave. Southeast, in the former location of the "Thirsty Turtle", near Coe College. In an interview with KCRG, owner Gerald Seals noted that he hopes the new club fills a big need in town for a more diverse variety of live music and entertainment options, appealing to minorities, but also the community as a whole that thirsts for something in addition to country and rock.

Jazz, blues and funk will be the top priorities at Uptown Live , seven days a week.

Even Melissa McCarville of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance sees value in the new venue, saying:

The more opportunity that we have, the more diversity that we have in our businesses and options, the more likely they are to find what they enjoy and that everyone can stay here, and grow here with us

The club's hours are:

  • Sunday: 2 p.m.-8 p.m.
  • Monday: 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Tuesday-Thursday: 11:30 a.m.-Midnight
  • Friday-Saturday: 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m.

Their Facebook page gives more information on location, hours and bookings.

We're snapping our fingers to the beat of a new style of nightclub. Welcome to Cedar Rapids!
