According to Wikipedia, "A sun dog is an atmospheric optical phenomena that consists of a bright spot to the left and/or the right of the Sun. They are best seen and most conspicuous when the Sun is near the horizon."

Early risers in Iowa saw a pretty cool light show in the form of sun dogs on Wednesday morning. My good friend, Matt Sheko, was one of those people. He's snapped these photos outside of his residence in Grinnell, Iowa.

Mr. Sheko was very optimistic when he told me, "At least something beautiful came out of this cold weather we've been experiencing!"

I sure hope the next time 'the dogs' come out to play, I can see them for myself. Thanks again for sharing your photos with us, Matt. It's very cool to see such an awesome atmospheric phenomenon.
