The Social Security Administration has released their annual list of the most popular baby names last year, and I don't think any of the results are really going to shock you. If your baby has any of these names, there's a good chance that, someday, they'll be sharing their name with at least one other person in their class. Let's start with the ladies. Here are the most popular female baby names of 2016:

  1. Emma
  2. Olivia
  3. Ava
  4. Sophia
  5. Isabella
  6. Mia
  7. Charlotte
  8. Abigail
  9. Emily
  10. Harper

Notice that the first 6 names all end with an "a." Interesting...

Now let's get to the boys. These are the top 10 baby names for boys in 2016:

  1. Noah
  2. Liam
  3. William
  4. Mason
  5. James
  6. Benjamin
  7. Jacob
  8. Michael
  9. Elijah
  10. Ethan

The Social Security Administration also released lists of names that saw a significant increase or decrease in popularity last year, and I definitely think pop culture is to blame. The name Kylo saw the biggest increase for boys, moving from a ranking of 3,269 to 901 within a year. Star Wars, anyone? The name Creed also jumped up pretty drastically, moving from 1,352nd place to 982nd place. I'm sure that's at least partially the movie "Creed"'s fault. The names Zayn and Khalid both jumped up in popularity, as well, which is most likely due to the popular recording artists with the same names.

For the ladies, the name Kehlani saw the biggest jump, going from 3,359 to 872. That might be due to singer Kehlani Parrish. Speaking of singers, the name Alessia had a jump in popularity, which I'm sure we can thank Alessia Cara for, and Celine also saw a nice little increase on the charts.

On the other side of things, the name that saw the biggest fall in popularity was Caitlin, moving from 609 to 1,151. Caitlyn, Katelynn, and Kaitlynn also all saw a decrease, which may have been impacted by Caitlyn Jenner.
