There’s a ‘Three’s Company’ Movie in the Works, Are You Really Surprised

With the endless stream of reboots and re-adaptations and remakes and reimaginings and re-whatever-other-word-we’re-using-now (revivals!), news like this becomes inevitable. Chances are, if you even vaguely recall a classic television show, it’s going to come back, and the best you can hope for is something like 21 Jump Street. At worst? It will cinematically haunt your soul, revealing the true insidious nature of your nostalgia like no horror you have ever known before. And with that Herzog-ian thought, we move onto today’s news: New Line is developing a movie based on Three’s Company.

THR reports that He’s Just Not That Into You and How to Be Single scribes Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein have been tapped to write the screenplay for the Three’s Company movie, which will keep the original ’70s setting of the classic television series. Based on the British show Man About the House, Three’s Company starred John Ritter as a man who pretends to be gay so he can room with two women, played by Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers.

The series originally ran from 1977 to 1984 and featured memorable supporting actors, including Don Knotts, Norman Fell and Audra Lindley — with the latter two eventually given their own spinoff.

You may also recall the show’s relentlessly perky, horrific ear worm of a theme song, which probably immediately lodged itself in your head as soon as you read the words “Three’s Company.” That theme song (and its ilk) melodically presaged the terror of Too Many Cooks. And now you have that stuck in your head. You’re welcome.

In any case, let’s think of some other TV shows that will inevitably become films — Perfect Strangers, Cheers (surprised that one hasn’t happened yet), or maybe something really wacky, like Riptide. Yeah, we could totally use a Riptide movie.
