One of the few remaining mysteries of this upcoming summer movie season is Brad Bird's Tomorrowland. It's mysterious because it's not a sequel, or based on a comic book or a reboot or remake. It's just a big movie that we know very little about, and that's just the way they want it. But, what exactly is Tomorrowland? This new trailer gives us our best look yet.

What “Tomorrowland” actually is in the movie looks to be one of the film's big secrets, but it's a place that seemingly holds the key to saving the world (because this is a movie, and the world always needs saving!). There are some standard movie cliches here — the brilliant young kid who's the chosen one, teaming up with a grizzled old veteran — but it's packaged in a way that it still feels new. Maybe it's the fact that, as we mentioned earlier, it's not based on anything. It feels refreshing. We're not waiting for characters to show up or complaining that it doesn't look like the comic, it just is. This new trailer doesn't exactly pull back the curtain to tell us everything about Tomorrowland, but maybe this is all we really need to know?

Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

In addition to George Clooney, the film also stars Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson.

Tomorrowland opens in theaters on May 22.
