The City of Iowa City has announced the confirmation of a destructive pest. A single beetle was submitted by an Iowa City resident, and positively identified as an adult Emerald Ash Borer, a beetle that is threatening to wipe out the Ash tree population. The good news is an infestation of the pest wasn't found. The bad news is, it's only a matter of time.

I used to have two Ash trees in my Cedar Rapids yard and years ago we took one of them out. The city removed the other last year. I'm convinced that something other than nature was doing a number on both of them, but we were never able to confirm it.

If you have an ash tree on your private property, you can contact the State Entomologist's Office for more information at (515) 725-1470. Learn more about the Emerald Ash Borer here.
