As I eluded to yesterday, after a family weekend getaway, our whole family has come down sick. It's the typical bug: coughing, congestion, sinus drainage. Yech. So I'm a bit desperate for relief, and decided to turn to a very curious home remedy. What could it hurt, right? That remedy is something called 'Turmeric Tea'.

If you have spent any time listening to John Tesh, he raves about the beneficial values of a spice named turmeric, which contains something called curcumin. It's an anti-inflammatory, and helpful in many cases. And while he has talked about it time, and time, and time again, he's not the only one.  In fact this morning, I was watching the Today show as they interviewed supermodel Rachel Hunter, who still looks amazing. They asked her what her secret is, and she swore by something called a "turmeric shot" to keep her healthy and feeling her best. In Today Show fashion, they all then did a "turmeric shot", which Matt was excited about, as he was also fighting a cold, and this was supposed to help. So it got my wheels turning as I looked for a recipe. I had the ginger and turmeric is the spice rack, and had lemon juice and honey, and knew I'd find something. Eventually, I stumbled upon this recipe for "Golden Elixer" on MarthaStewart.com.  It's Martha Stewart, so it's got to be good.

If you want to make it for yourself, it's:

  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • cayenne to taste
  • honey to taste

Simply combine it all in a cup of hot water, and there you go!

So how did it taste? Thanks to the honey and lemon, even ginger, it really wasn't bad, although my wife made quite the face. The cayenne adds a kick, which almost instantly opens the sinuses, for instant relief. Just make sure you keep stirring, and top off the water if you get low with a lot of grit, as the powder doesn't seems to dissolve really quick. Yes, beware the last gulp.

Does it work? Who knows. Again, I had instant relief. But now, later in the day, I can't honestly say I'm feeling great by any means. With all the buzz though, I am willing to try it again tomorrow and see how it goes. If so many swear by the benefits of turmeric, especially combined with ginger, it certainly can't hurt.  I'll let you know.

Are you willing to try?
