Volunteers Needed for Creek Cleanup

If your Sunday is looking pretty empty, why not spend a few hours helping out the environment?

The first creek cleanup of the year is coming up this Sunday from 12-3 p.m. at Ralston Creek in Iowa City, and volunteers are needed to help remove trash, invasive species, and woody debris. The clean-up can help improve water quality, as well as reduce flooding and erosion.

If this sounds like something that interests you, you should start by RSVP-ing to the Iowa City Stormwater Volunteer Cleanup Facebook event (you can also call 319-541-2385). A parent/guardian will have to sign a liability form for any volunteers under 18-years-old. The Facebook event says that all volunteers should come prepared to get dirty, and they say you should wear long pants, long sleeves, closed toe shoes/boots, and a hat. You don't need to worry about bringing any equipment because the city will provide tools, gloves, and water.

On Sunday, the day of the event, all volunteers will meet in the parking lot behind the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, located at 220 S. Gilbert St. That's where you will receive your assignment.

If you'd like to help out another day, there are several other cleanups scheduled this month, on April 9th, 23rd, and 30th.
