Don’t Drive a Car Right After Watching ‘Baby Driver’s Exhilarating Opening Chase Scene

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is already the director’s most successful film to date, with a $76 million worldwide take so far on a budget of $34 million. But the movie has yet to open in a bunch of countries, including Germany, Brazil, Japan, and more (it only just had its Australian premiere, courtesy of George Miller). So, to get more bods in theater seats, Universal has released the entire opening bank heist and car chase scene from the movie on YouTube. Even if you’ve already seen the movie, you gotta watch this again. And turn your volume up.

I’m no psychic, but I’m pretty confident in my prediction that this will go down in cinema history as one of the best car chases ever filmed. Not only does it feature Wright’s stylish, stylized quick cuts, punch-ins, and nimble camerawork, it’s all done in time to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms,” the song Wright pretty much built this movie around. He’d wanted to do a car chase sequence set to this song for about twenty years, and with Baby Driver he finally got his wish.

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Baby Driver is currently playing.
