Living with someone who doesn't share the same political beliefs as you can be pretty stressful, especially during this insane election season. If you're looking for tips on how to survive the next few weeks, we've got some!

According to a new survey, 52% of Americans are at least a little bit stressed out about this year's election. You know what makes matters worse? SOCIAL MEDIA. 54% of people who use social media are stressed over politics, and 38% of people said that political discussions on Facebook and other similar sites are stressing them out more. I am going to have to agree with all of this. For the most part, I like to keep my political beliefs off of the internet. Is what I have to say going to change your mind? I'm guessing not. So I just do my own research and stay out of it!

The one thing that's not stressing me out this election season is the fact that I don't live with a person who has strong opposing beliefs. I've talked to quite a few people who are living in a politically-divided household, and it does NOT sound like a good time. Especially if both people are very passionate about their feelings. I read an article from SixSeeds today, which gives some pretty good advice on how to deal with a situation like this. Here are their four tips:

  • Remember that what happens in YOUR home is more important than who becomes president. Don't throw away lifelong relationships and friendships over a person who is going to be in office 4-8 years. Commitment should matter more than disagreements.
  • Have discussions, not debates.  It's ok to talk about your thoughts, but don't go into the discussion with a goal to change the other person's mind. An argument like that will do more harm than good. Sometimes you just have to agree to disagree.
  • Don't take it personally. Just because your significant other/friend doesn't agree with you, doesn't mean they don't respect you. Try not to take it to heart.
  • Have fun with it. If your partner has a good sense of humor, maybe make funny bets on the election or stick a bumper sticker on their car for the opposing candidate and see how long it takes them to notice. You really have to KNOW the other person though, otherwise this could end badly.

How do you deal with your friends/family members having different political beliefs than you? For people close to me, I just hide their social media posts instead of deleting them or getting into an online war. It's really helped a lot. Share your tips in the comments below.
