May is National Teachers Appreciation Month. I believe everyone has at least one teacher who has left a significant imprint on their lives. We owe our thanks to those educators who bring passion and purpose to their jobs everyday. And we know there are a LOT who do just that. Which is why we've asked you to help us select 'Ten Top Teachers' to recognize with a spirited "thank you" and a gift from Tanger Outlet Center in Williamsburg.

We begin today by recognizing Scott Fillner, a 4th grade teacher at Bowman Woods Elementary in Cedar Rapids.

Scott was nominated by two parents. Amanda Johanson described Mr. Fillner as "an amazing teacher who blends education, technology, and fun together in a way that makes me wonder how he has the time! My child comes home with enthusiastic stories about her learning experience and her day. Mr. Fillner is the kind of teacher that every kid deserves every year!"

Cara Lausen wrote: "(His) students are learning to be amazing human beings. The students have learned how to introduce themselves, how to be amazing friends, how to give and receive compliments, how to be vulnerable by bearing your weaknesses and then build each other up. On top of all the outstanding social skills that rival many adults, they're learning in such unique ways! They often skype with authors of books they read."

Congratulations and thank you, Mr. Scott Fillner for making such a significant impact on the students you teach!
