A beautiful weekend for golf meant a wonderful chance for a community to yet again honor a beloved fallen hero.

After a national nonprofit group, Tunnel to Towers announced it was making the family of slain Iowa State Patrol trooper Ted Benda the beneficiaries of a fully-paid home mortgage, his community came together on a slightly more local scale to honor him and continue to show that their thoughts are with him and his surviving family.

Trooper Benda died in the line of duty during an accident last fall while responding to a call. KCRG says the annual tournament is put on by the Hamilton County Police Officers Association, with a different beneficiary every year. The event raises around $20,000 each year. The ongoing help and love from the community have not gone unnoticed by Benda's late wife, Holly.

My youngest was three weeks old when Ted passed, so we have a long life without him. And to have benefits like this means everything

In addition to raising funds for Benda, the event also commemorated his Iowa State Patrol comrade and colleague, Sergeant Jim Smith, who was shot and killed in the line of duty last year in Grundy Center, and whose own community of Independence recently unveiled a plan for a statue and football field plaza renovations in his honor.

At the auction following the tournament, two flags that flew over the U.S. Capitol for both men were up for bids.
