The City of Cedar Rapids is reminding people to stay safe on city sidewalks as cycling season begins to ramp up. The city recently installed stickers that read 'Walk Your Wheels' on sidewalks in the Downtown, Newbo, Czech Village, and Kingston Village Districts.

The decals serve as a reminder that in the downtown area and surrounding districts bikes, scooters, and skateboards are not permitted on sidewalks. They encourage people to walk their bikes in these areas for the safety of pedestrians. They can ride in the designated bike lanes or may also use the normal traffic lanes as well. The 'Walk Your Wheels' campaign is a component of public education to encourage pedestrian safety.

The city is also reminding cyclists of other safety issues including:

  • Follow and obey all traffic laws at all times
  • Use protective headgear
  • Go with the flow. Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Stay Alert
  • Use hand signals
